EXHIBIT: What's That?

Long Forgotten Tools and Other Obsolete Objects

This exhibit explores Shaker and Early American tools and equipment used by farmers, woodworkers, blacksmiths, and other laborers as northeast Ohio was transformed from wilderness to agrarian society.

PROGRAM: The Shaker vs. the Secular Life:

A Dramatic Dialogue

NOTE LOCATION: Dunham Tavern, 6709 Euclid Ave.

Offering a bit of original historical, dramatic fiction, The Shaker Historical Society and The Dunham Tavern Museum are partnering on this special program exploring the differences between life in a rural, communal, Shaker village and life in an urban tavern. The audience will experience a fictitious conversation that takes place in 1855 and includes Elder James Prescott (1803-1888), a leading Shaker at North Union village, and Rufus Dunham, owner of Dunham Tavern.

Find answers to these questions and more with Sabine Kretzschmar, Executive Director of The Shaker Historical Society & Museum and Meghan Hays, Local History Librarian at the Shaker Heights Public Library.

Learn about the basics of Shaker furniture from Columbus-based antiques dealer, Charles Muller, author of The Shaker Chair . Muller will explore what collectors should look for, great examples of Shaker craftsmanship, and the characteristics that make Shaker furniture so popular today.
